What Is Jesus My Son ?

Jesus My Son is a book I have been working on since 2006. It all started one Sunday morning in Elmville, Kentucky when Brother Joe Brown preached a sermon in Oakland Christian Church about the sacrifice Mary and Joseph offered when they took their six week old baby to the temple for the redemption ceremony. For the sacrifice, they could only afford two pigeons. It made me wonder what Mary must have thought. She knew she had just given birth to the promised Messiah, yet she could only redeem him with a sacrifice of the poor. What else did Mary endure as the mother of Jesus? Mary was a normal mother just like most of us—not just an instrument God used to fulfill prophecy.

The only difference is that all the time Mary was raising her children, she was expecting a great kingdom to appear for her oldest son. She had no idea what kind of kingdom Gabriel promised for her son. She probably expected to live in a mansion at some point in her life. After all, Gabriel did mention the throne of David which set in a majestic mansion.

Thus, the seed was planted, and I began looking at the scripture from Mary's point of view. I started writing individual stories of events that were written in the four gospels as I thought Mary might view them. It was not an easy task trying to coordinate the events that are recorded. For example, Matthew says Joseph took Mary as his wife as if it happened shortly after the angel visited him, but Luke tells us Mary went to visit Elizabeth for three months. Matthew goes into great detail about the Magi's visit, but Luke doesn't even mention it. There are many such inconsistencies, but not contradictions, in the scripture. When I looked at the events from Mary's view, they all started to fit together. It was just like working a jigsaw puzzle, and those of you who know me, know I love working jigsaw puzzles.

I had a hard time figuring out how to present the message. Then I thought about what we would know if Mary had only written a journal. How did she react when the angel visited her? What did she think when those smelly shepherds rushed into that stable and bowed down to worship her son?
What started to be a simple little book, has turned into at least three major novels. The first one, Jesus My Son: Mary's Journal of Jesus' Early Life will be released in late January. The second one, Jesus My Son: Mary's Journal of Jesus' Ministry is about half finished. The third one, Jesus My Son: Mary's Journal of Jesus' Death and Resurrection is percolating in my mind.

I would like to use this website to introduce some of the assumptions I have made in my story, and, hopefully, receive feedback from my readers. Please visit often and leave a comment or ask a question. I will try my best to answer each one.

Thank you for your time.
